A locals guide to London with Rose Jurlina

Rose Jurlina is a freelance photographer and producer from Aotearoa, now calling London home. Between projects and weekends spent travelling, she’s become adept at seeking out the city’s hidden corners and seasonal highlights.

With Summer in full swing in the Northern Hemisphere, she shares her guide to London in the warmer months - from design-led wine bars and bustling markets to serene swimming spots tucked into nature and architectural gems.

In a city as big as London, it’s easy to stay local — so my favourite spots are mostly around North and East London.

Mornings usually start with a walk through Clissold Park. Fink’s, now nestled in Clissold House, is perfect for grabbing a matcha. On weekends, Lot 103 is my go to for a relaxed vibe. Grab a stool outside, order their Danish inspired breakfast and take in the morning scenes.

Down the street in Newington Green is Cadet, a wine bar with a daily changing menu — just ask what’s good and trust whatever plates they bring. Other favourites: 107 in Clapton, A Bar with Shapes for a Name (for Bauhaus inspired cocktails), Goodbye Horses, and Mu (for live jazz and Japanese food, a perfect pairing).

Weekends are made for Broadway market — food stalls, bookshops, and cafes. In the evening, head to the Dove for a drink while everyone spills onto the street to catch the last of the sun. London Fields is nearby, and in summer the Lido is perfect for a swim.

For an idyllic swimming spot, explore Hampstead Heath. Take a dip in the ponds, walk around the heath, head to the viewpoint and switch off from the city. The surrounding streets are worth exploring too, Ottolenghi for lunch and Daunt Books for a browse.

Back in the city, the Barbican is a must for brutalist architecture. Pop in for an exhibition, watch a movie at the outdoor cinema, or grab a glass of wine and wander through the observatory.
